That sound, filling and echoing in heaven and earth alike, verily split/shook the hearts of Dhritarashtra’s army.
Note: Krishna had agreed to join Arjuma on the specific condition that he would not wield any weapon or directly participate in the war. His whole army was given to Duryodhana. But it is significant that he was yet the one to respond to Bheeshma’s war call, leaving Dhristadyumna, Yudhishtira’s commander-in-chief, who preferred to wait. How well does dharma protect the Pandava army is subtly seen everywhere. It is Krishna’s timely forethought, prudence and insight alone that led Pandavas to victory. Following Krishna’s conch-blow, the Pandavas and others all blew their conches alone. No war instruments were sounded. Yet the sound had inflicted the hearts and minds of Duryodhana’s army. Why so, can well be imagined. Another subtle effect of the dharmakshetra as well as the dharmic character of Yudhishtira brothers.
