Key Concept : Source of sukha-duhkha (Duality)

Meaning : These men are not the cause of my happiness or distress. Neither any god, nor the jeeva, nor even the planets, deeds, and time. They (the Wise and the Scriptures) consider that the mind, which sets in motion the wheel of worldliness, alone is the cause.

Meaning : In enjoyment, there is fear of disease; in family reputation, there is fear of falling; in wealth, there is fear of kings; in prestige/pride, there is fear of misery; in power, there is fear of enemy or adversary; in beauty, there is fear of old age; in scriptural erudition, there is fear of learned opponents; in virtue, there is fear of wicked vilifying person; in body, there is fear of death. For human beings, everything in this world is coupled/associated with fear. Vairāgya (dispassion towards worldly enjoyments) alone bestows fearlessness.

Meaning : If the mind, outgoing, strays from the ideal of Brahman even slightly, then it goes down hither and thither like a ball dropped inadvertently on the staircase going down from one step to another.

Meaning : That Guru is not a Guru, that relative is not a relative, a father is not a father, a mother is not a mother, that deity is not a deity and the husband is not a husband, if he cannot liberate one from impending death.

Meaning : O Lord of the Raghus, no other desire do I entertain any time in my heart. You, being the Inner Self of all, know it well. I am speaking the truth. O best of all the Raghus, grant me such devotion which is exclusive and all-engulfing, making my mind rid of desire and all other taints.

Meaning : Contented with the experience of constant bliss, he is neither tormented nor elated by the sense interactions. He neither clings to them, nor he is averse to them. He always sports and delights in his own Self.

Meaning : I am neither wholesomely dedicated to dharma (morality), nor am I a knower of the Self. I have no devotion to your lotus feet either. Having nothing in my possession, having no other shelter, I surrender at your lotus feet, the refuge of all.

Meaning : O’ learned one! Like the two wings in the case of a bird, so are dispassion and discrimination in the case of a seeker of Truth. Know this. In order to ascend to the top of the mansion of liberation, both dispassion and discrimination are required and not either one.

Meaning : Daily with rising and setting of the sun, life shortens. With the heavy burden of manifold activities and affairs, time is also not felt. Seeing birth, old age, disaster and death, fear is not produced (in the mind). The world has become insane drinking the intoxicating wine of delusion.

Meaning : To the one who has realized Brahman in all aspects, the whole world becomes the heavenly garden; all the objects the kalpavṛkṣās (the wishyielding trees); every water-flow the holy Ganges; all his actions, virtue and auspiciousness; the elevated as well as the foolish talks (words) the Vedāntavākyās; the entire earth, Vārānasī. Every thought or awareness of his reveals to Him only Brahman.

Meaning : Remembering the small amount of water which it was given in its early age, the coconut trees carry nectar like water on their head throughout their life. [In the same manner] good and noble people do not forget a favour done to them.

Meaning : May our speech remain engrossed in relating your qualities and virtues, ears in your stories, hands in doing your service, mind in the remembrance of your feet, head in prostrating before the world which is your abode and the eyes in seeing your devotees, who are no other than your manifestations.

Meaning : After many births, this rare human body is obtained which although itself transient is conducive to attain the supreme welfare in human life. A wise, therefore, should without losing time endeavour for the supreme felicity before the body, which is constantly followed by death, falls; for sense enjoyments are available all around.

Key Concept : Mind Enrichment

Meaning : Bracelets do not decorate a person, nor do necklaces glittering like the moon, nor bath, nor smearing the body with fragrance, nor flowers, and nor decorated hair. Only that speech embellishes a person, which has been upheld with cultural refinement. Indeed, all ornaments decay. Ornament of speech is always the real ornament.

Meaning : What anxiety can there be in my life if the Lord (Hari) is praised or known as all-pervading and all-sustaining? Or else (if the Lord is not all sustaining), how mother’s breast shall secrete for (saving and nourishing) the life of the newborn? Pondering over this truth again and again, O Lord (Yadupati or Krishna, Lakshmipati or Vishnu), time is spent by me remaining exclusively, in the constant thought of Your Lotus-feet.

Meaning : We are content to wear garments made of bark of trees and you with dress made of soft material. But the contentment is alike; the difference in attire makes no difference. He whose desires are huge is indeed poor. If the contentment is in the mind, then who is rich and who is poor?
