Harih Om Tat Sat. Jai Guru.

All of you are, in a way, spiritual seekers. It is good and we compliment you for that. But, as spiritual seekers, I am wondering whether you are having the right and the precise focus. Our personality is a composite. In this composite, there is the gross physical perceptible body, a biological aggregate. It is consisting of matter and energy. But this aggregate will be of no use at all, unless our mind is there to sense the existence of the body and to repeatedly and variously employ the parts of the body. How many of you are aware of this fact? So our personality has got two counterparts. One is the physical, biological matter-energy aggregate. Now, the next one is what you are not giving attention to. How can I bring about a change in your stand, and in your attention? What is the other part? The other part is the internal, inner personality, consisting of mind, intelligence, and ego. Up to this point you will agree. But where the difficulty comes is that what do you mean by mind, intelligence, and ego. The body is consisting of matter and energy, and this mind is different from the body, and it is employing the body and bodily parts every time. To sense the body and to employ the bodily parts for different activities, the mind cannot be just either matter or energy; and it is not. If it is not matter and energy, the question arises, what it is. Why is it that you are not enquiring into it and finding out? Can you give me any answer?

“It doesn’t occur to us.”

Ok, many of you who are coming here, you are certainly seekers, some of you are advanced seekers. Being seekers and advanced seekers, should you not give sufficient focus to understanding the mind? You need not understand it as a doctor does or a psychiatrist does. I only want you to know that just like we are with the senses perceiving different forms of existence, matter, and energy, we must also understand what this mind is. Understanding the other objects, they are different from us. But this mind is internal to the body and that is what makes us feel the presence of the body and make it function. Being so, can you be away from the mind? And what is this mind? As a thing, as an existence, as a substance, what is that? It is not matter and not energy, but it is in the nature of sentience, awareness, or consciousness. It is this consciousness that you have to know. In every function and experience of yours, what comes to play is the consciousness. So we are functioning with the consciousness, sensing the body, making them work, making the different parts work. In spite of it, we don’t understand what the mind is. Can this travesty be accepted? It cannot be accepted. That is why I am speaking repeatedly about this subject.

A thought arises and you suddenly know that a thought has arisen. A feeling occurs in you. Immediately you know it. So all the functions of the mind are quite palpable or experiential. While the functions of the mind are experiential, the functioning substance, how can it be non-experiential? I think your focus should be to find out what functions as the mind, what functions as the intelligence. The functions you are aware of. How can you miss the functioner?

We are walking with the legs. Walking we know, but the legs we miss. Can it be like that? With the hands I hold, but the hand I miss. It cannot be. In the external sphere, the hand as well as the function, both are visible and objective. Here, internally, the function is experiential, but the functioning substance or element, we are not able to understand. So naturally your focus should be: what functions. Stop all mental functions and find out what substance is there. Let all intellectual functions come to a stop and find out what is functioning there. In order to observe the legs, you stop walking and then look at the legs. In the same manner, stop thinking and look at the mind. Stop the intellection and then look at that intellectional substance. In one sense it is very, very simple. At no point of time, the Self is away from you or you are away from it.

In all the functions of the mind, the Self alone is revealed. In all the functions of the intelligence, the Self alone is revealed. You are seeing so many objects and light, throughout the day, but you miss your eyes. We are giving so much importance to what is seen, but we give no importance to what sees or who sees. Now this is a delusion everybody has. Nature has put us into this delusion. Now our role is to de-delude ourselves. The will, the wish, the potential, the scope are given to us. Now, you examine yourselves and tell me, have you ever made any effort for this? If you have made, have you succeeded? If you have not succeeded, why did you not succeed? And noticing the lack of success, what further did you do to pursue the matter with greater effectiveness and satisfaction? These are the questions I would like to pose before every one of you. And you have to find your answer. If you feel like you may tell me.
