Dear and blessed Seekers, Here are 9 verses taken from the most handsome and ancient Vedantic text Yogavasiṣṭha, which records the dialogue between Sri Rama and Sage Vasiṣṭha. The verses belong to the Nirvāna Prakaraṇa and further to the story of Chooḍālā (a queen) and Śikhidhvaja, her consort. This is the most copious and revealing of the several stories told by Vasiṣṭhadev and as you can find, it illustrates the true nature of spiritual life and attainment; as also the secret of gaining peace and gracefulness. My dear souls, this is the best gift I can think of giving you all on this occassion. -Swamiji ।। १ ।। यत्किंचिद्यन्न किंचिच्च तज्जानामि यथास्थितम् ।
यथोदयं यथानाशं तेनास्मि श्रीमती स्थिता ।।
yad-kincidyanna kiṅcicca tad-jānāmi yathāsthitam ।
yathodayaṃ yathānāśaṃ tenāsmi ṣrīmatī sthitā ।।
Having known whatever is, whatever is not, how has come all this, how is this all existing and finally going into non-expression, I live with cheerfulness constantly on my face.
।। २ ।।
भोगैररभुक्तैरतुप्यामि भुक्तैरिव सुदूरगै: ।
न हृष्यामि न कुप्यामि तेनास्मि श्रीमती स्थिता ।।
bhogairarabhuktairatupyāmi bhuktairiva sudūragai: ।
na hṛṣyāmi na kupyāmi tenāsmi ṣrīmatī sthitā ।। ।। ३ ।।
एकैवाकाशसंकाशे केवले हृदये रमे ।
न रमे राजलीलासु तेनास्मि श्रीमती स्थिता ।।
ekaivākāś-saṃkāśe kevale hṛdaye rame ।
na rame rājlīlāsu tenāsmi ṣrīmatī sthitā ।। In the most subtle ethereal recess of my own heart am I dwelling constantly. Not in the royal sports and games. Hence it is that I look exceptionally graceful.
।। ४ ।।
आत्मन्येव हि तिष्ठामि ह्यासनोद्यानसद्मसु ।
न भोगेषु न लज्जासु तेनाहं श्रीमती स्थिता ।।
ātmānyeva hi tiṣṭhami hyāsanodyānasadmasu ।
na bhogeṣu na lajjāsu tenāhaṃ ṣrīmatī sthitā ।। Whether I sit on royal thrones or stroll in the gardens and palaces, my resting place is always on my own inner self. I am thus indifferent to royal delights and pretences. Constant look of blessedness thus, graces me all through.
।। ५ ।।
जगता प्रभुरेवास्मि न किंचिन्मात्ररूपिणी ।
इत्यात्मन्येव तुष्यामि तेनाहं श्रीमती स्थिता ।।
jagatā prabhurevāsmi na kiṃcinmātrarūpiṇī । Realizing that I have no specific personality, I have become the Lord of all the worlds. This is the outcome of remaining content with my own inmost self. Naturally a fine look of gracefulness adorns my face. ।। ६ ।।
इदं चाहमिदं नाहं सत्या चाहं न चाप्यहम् ।
सर्वमस्मि न किंचिच्च तेनाहं श्रीमती स्थिता ।।
idaṃ cāhamidaṃ nāhaṃ satyā cāhaṃ na cāpyaham । I am this as well as the not-this. Both the true and the untrue I am. I am in short the all. Equally so I am nothing. This realization of mine gives a radiant appearance to my body. ।। ७ ।।
न सुखं प्रार्थये नार्थं नानर्थं नेतरा स्थितम् ।
यथाप्राप्तेन हृष्यामि तेनाहं श्रीमती स्थिता ।।
na sukhaṃ prārthaye nārthaṃ nānarthaṃ netarā sthitam । I crave not for happiness. Neither riches nor poverty and the like attract me. I am fully content with whatever comes on my way. Hence I live with immeasurable peace and brilliance. ।। ८ ।।
तनुविद्वेषराजाभि: प्रज्ञाभि: शास्त्रदृष्टिभि: ।
रमे सह वयस्याभि: तेनाहं श्रीमती स्थिता ।।
tanuvidveṣarājābhi: prajñābhi: śāstradṛṣtibhi: ।rame saha vayasyābhi: tenāhaṃ ṣrīmatī sthitā ।। Those are the kings whom I have chosen for my company, who shape their insight on the basis of the Śastras and who have well subdued their passions. I sport with them freely and delight born of such sporting is what makes me look so very handsome to you.
।। ९ ।।
पश्यामि यन्नयनरश्मिभिरिन्द्रियैर्वा चित्तेन चेह हि तदंग न किंचिदेव ।
पश्यामि तद्विरहिते तु न किंचिदन्त: पश्यामि सम्यगिति नाथ चिरोदयामि ।।
paśyāmi yannayanaraśmibhirindriyairvā cittena ceha hi tadaṃga na kiṃcideva ।paśyāmi tadvirahite tu na kiṃcidantaḥ paśyāmi samyagiti nātha cirodayāmi ।। O Lord, I see that everything perceived by the senses or conceived by the mind is really nothing. But something I see very clearly within myself, which refutes the grasp of the senses and the mind. This inner thing constitutes the completeness of vision. That is again that which makes me look bright and pleasing, like the full moon.
